Your baby may look super cute as those first teeth pop out, but for many parents teething isn’t a laughing matter!

Did you know your baby’s teeth have been hidden under the gum since life in the womb! All 20 teeth sit there until 3-6 months when teething can start. Expect all those pearly whites to be out by the age of 2-3 years. Yes you heard me right, that could be three years of teething! Before we freak out, breathe, pop the kettle on and follow these top tips to get you (and bub) sleeping through teething.



BABY TEETHING FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS


  • HOW LONG WILL MY BABY BE TEETHING FOR?

It may be a shock to learn your baby has all their teeth from birth! 20 teeth sit under the gum before they are even born! Around 3-6 months teething can start and most continue until 2-3 years old. Yes you heard me! There could be up to 3 years of teething! Don’t freak out. I am here to help.

  • DO AMBER BEADS HELP BABY SLEEP BETTER WHEN TEETHING?

Although many parents use amber beads to treat pain, there is little evidence to support the benefits. Personally, the well documented risk of choking/strangulation far outweighs the benefit

  • DO TEETHING GELS WORK?

Despite recent conversations teething gels have been deemed safe when used as directed on the packet. The risk of toxicity is present when consumption is excessive. Do not give more than is needed and always follow the directions on the pack.


  • DO I NEED TO BRUSH BABY’S TEETH?

  • DOES CHAMOMILE TEA HELP TEETHING BABIES?

Chamomile tea has been used anecdotally for centuries but is not backed by valid research. There has been an association with botulism spores in chamomile plants (rare but fatal) and therefore it is not advised to offer chamomile until after 12 months.


  • WILL TEETHING MEAN MY BABY WON’T SLEEP?

It may surprise you to hear not all babies struggle with teeth. Teething doesn’t usually wake your baby but it can make resettling a challenge. If your baby already struggles with night waking, early rising or short naps your disturbed sleep may be intensified. The best way to stop teeth causing issues?   • CAN YOU SLEEP TRAIN WHEN BABY IS TEETHING?

If you are waiting for teething to stop before you sleep train… you may be waiting a while! I don’t recommend starting a new sleep training plan when you first notice teething symptoms. Instead treat using the above tips and wait for 2-5 days for the teething to pass. If you are in the middle of sleep training when teething occurs I recommend continuing. You can offer slightly more comfort without undoing your hard work.
